Torlarp Larpjaroensook (Hern), born in 1977, is an emerging Thai artist based in Chiang Mai. At the age of 16, he enrolled at the College of Fine Arts in Bangkok and later graduated from the Fine Arts Faculty at Chiang Mai University with a BA (Visual Art) in Painting and Printmaking. His practice alternates between art and design, and dwells between function and aesthetics. For Hern, the “books” in Bookshelf represent the various trends and histories of contemporary art. These books are actually appropriated oil paintings in impasto style, based on popular and widely available art books.

As with all books, the full value of their content is gained when they are read. However, in the case of art books, where heavy visual elements complement the written word, a person could skim through its pages, focusing only on the pictures and assuming the book has been well read and understood. For the artist who reads mainly in Thai, this case is not only usual but personal. As an artist, Hern often feels frustrated and unfulfilled when encountering such books. His access to knowledge of a wider, more international and current practice of art is limited to the number of pictures included in a book.

In Bookshelf, the function of the book is reversed and the “books” are now consumed directly through their visual quality.

The work is co-commissioned by SAM and the Singapore Writers Festival 2011, and supported by the Heritage Gala Fund.

โครงการก่อสร้างโรงพยาบาลโดยการออกแบบแบบมีส่วนร่วมที่เกาะยาว
คือการพัฒนาศูนยืแพทย์ชุมชนบนเกาะที่มีอยู่เดิม บนเกาะยาวใหญ่ เกาะกลางทะเลอันดามัน มีประชากรอาศัยอยู่ 10000 คน
เดิม มีสถานีอนามัยตำบลพรุใน ให้การดูแลผู้ป่วย ต่อมามีแพทย์อยุ่ประจำ เมื่อ 8 ปีก่อน ได้ปรับเปลี่ยนเป็นศูนย์แพทย์ชุมชนและต่อมาในปีนี้
ชุมชนได้ร่วม ระดมทุนเพื่อก่อสร้างอาคารเรือนพักผู้ป่วย เพื่อให้สามารถดูแลผุ้ป่วยได้มากขึ้น โดยทำการออกแบบร่วมกับสถาปนิกอาสา กลุ่ม CROSSs โดยเน้นออกแบบอย่างมีส่วนร่วมของชุมชน โดยมีความมุ่งหวังให้เป็นโรงพยาบาลเล็กๆที่สร้างโดยชุมชน
อบอุ่นและเหมาะสมกับวิถีชีวิตวัฒนธรรมของชุมชน

การเขียนคำนิยม…………….ไม่ง่ายนะ ครับ เพราะยังไงก็แล้วแต่ ศิลปินก็คงจะให้คนที่สนิทๆกันเขียนกันเอง ชมกันเอง ยอกันเอง…….ถ้ามองในแง่ดีหน่อย…….ยกความดีของผลงานมาอธิบายได้
แต่ ไม่ซิครับ ส่งมาให้ผม ผมต้องได้ประโยชน์ในการเขียนด้วย จากที่เคยแค่มองตัวผลงาน พูดคุย ท้วงถามหลายๆอย่าง………หลายๆครั้งที่ผมเฝ้าสังเกตศิลปินสร้างผลงาน ผมตกหลุมพรางที่ตัวศิลปินแอบตั้งคำถาม
ตีความกันวุ่นวายไปหมด…………..หลายทฤษฎี
วิเคราะห์กันมันส์ปาก ลืมกินข้าวกินปลา
เสียเวลาจริงๆ
ผลงานนั้นยิ่งดูยิ่งง่าย เรื่องจริง ไม่อ้อมโลกให้ว้าวุ่นเหนื่อยหัว
แต่แล้วพอคลุกคลีตีโมงกับตัวศิลปิน
ผมไปเจออะไรแทนรู้ไหม
ปรัชญาครับๆๆๆๆๆ
ผล งานศิลปะจะแยกออกจากชีวิตได้อย่างไร คำถามนี้มีคนถามมาเยอะ และส่วนมากคนที่อธิบายว่าแยกได้…………….เท่าที่สังเกตดู……..ไม่ค่อยน่าคบหา เท่าไหร่ เหมือนคนยากๆคนนึง
ต่อลาภ ลาภเจริญสุข ศิลปินคนนี้ผมขอบอกเลย………..ว่าถ้าได้ก้าวข้ามมาในอาณาจักรความคิดของเขา……. เขาอาจเป็นชายคนเดียวในวงการสร้างสรรค์ที่จู่ๆคุณคิดถึงเขาคุณก็อยากเดินไป บอกว่าคิดถึงผลงานคุณต่อลาภ
ผลงานของศิลปิน…….มุ่งไปที่ไหนรู้ไหม……….. ไม่ใช่ความงามที่เสี้ยมสอนกันมา ไม่ใช่ความคิดที่ปักแน่นน่าเรียนรู้………..แต่เป็นบรรยากาศ เป็นเสียงของสรรพสิ่ง เป็นความจริงใจอันแท้
และยิ่งตัวศิลปินกับผลงาน แล้ว ไม่ได้แยกออกจากกัน ถ้าท่านนั่งญาณเข้าสภาวะเเอ๊บสแตร๊คได้………ท่านจะเห็นว่า…………………..ตัวศิลปิน กับผลงานมันเป็นก๊อปปี้ ที่ไม่รู้ว่าอันไหนตัวพ่อแบบตัวแม่แบบและที่สำคัญกว่าคือมิได้ผ่านการ ประดิษฐ์ประดอยทัศนคติแต่เป็นการเรียบเรียงรสนิยมเชิงประสบการณ์เก่าของตัว ศิลปินและผ่านจิตใต้สำนึก……..เค้นหลุดออกมาอย่างสวยสด…..
ดูแล้วเหมือนเสียงนกร้องยามเช้า…….ไม่รู้เหมือนกันว่ามันพูดอะไร…………แต่ไพเราะจับจิต………..อยากเป็นคนตื่นเช้า…………ไปกันเลย

สรุปว่า ศิลปินคนนี้ผมขอยอ…………กันตรงๆไปเลย
คือชื่นชอบและอยากให้ท่านผู้เสพสุนทรียะอีกหลายๆท่านได้พบของละเอียดอ่อน
ที่ไม่ได้ถูกแยกอะไรออกจากกันเลย ระหว่างตัวศิลปินและตัวผลงาน
โปรดสนุกและเพลิดเพลินกับการค้นหา
ความหมายย้อนกลับ
จากน่านฟ้าโพสต์โมเดิร์นย้อนกลับไปสู่ลำคลองสุนทรีย์เล็กๆที่แสนจริงใจ
จากชายผู้มาจากริมคลองเมืองเก่าอยุธยา

จากใจที่แสนเปราะบางและสั่นเทา
ทีมงาน บริษัทย้อนแยงสุนทรียะและสหาย

ปล. ฝากถามทุกๆท่านที่ถือเเผ่นพับเเผ่นนี้ว่า ทำไมต้องถามว่าศิลปะคืออะไร ในเมือสุดท้ายแล้วมันเพียงแค่สัดส่วนเล็กๆของการมีชีวิตที่ปกติสุขอย่าง สร้างสรรค์ก็เท่านั้น

From Ayudhaya’s canal to “Post-modern” territorial airspace

Writing this article,…is not easy because, in any case, artist will usually ask someone who is close to him to write about him and to give him some nice compliments…or optimistically, to explain the virtue of his works

But no..if he ask me, I should be beneficial from writing this article, too

From looking at his works, having conversations with him or asking him questions….. there were many times when I observed the artist doing his artworks and I had fallen into the trap of his questions that he had set secretly ….then we would be busy defining them… with many theories…,or enjoyed analyzing them until forgot to eat, wasting our times..

The more I look at his works, the easier they are. They are true, not beating around the bush nor being bustle.

And when I have associated with the artist, do you know what I have found? The Philosophy!!!!

Can we separate art from life? This question has been asked so many times and when most people say yes, it is possible, from my observation; they are not people whom I want to associate with that much. They seem difficult.

Torlarp Larpjaroensook, as I can tell, once you have stepped into the empire of his mind, he may be the only one in this creative realm that you suddenly think of him and want to walk to him then say “I think of your works… do you know where they lead me to?... they don’t lead me to the beauty that I have raised up with so far nor the dogmatic thought of learning..but they are the atmosphere, the voice of things and the pure heartfelt feeling”.

Especially when artist and artworks are not separated, if you can meditate until you reach the abstract state, you will realize that the artist and his works are the same copy that no one knows which one is the original.

And it is even more important when his works have not been through the process of attitude elaboration but is only the re-arrangement of personal taste from the former experiences aspect which is beautifully pumped out through the subconscious.

It may sound like a bird coos in the morning, we do not know what he sings but it is so beautiful that we, somehow, want to be the early riser.

In conclusion, to be straightforward, I would like to praise this artist because I admire him and want to persuade the aesthetes to see the delicate things which have not been divided, between artist and his works.

Do have fun and enjoy the exploration on the reversed meaning from “Post Modern” territorial airspace to the small and sincere aesthetic waterway from a man from Ayudhaya’s canal
